Fuel Efficiency in Mobile Crushers

Fuel represents one of the largest recurring operating costs for mobile crushing plants, making fuel efficiency a significant factor in both equipment selection and day-to-day operating practices.

Diesel-electric hybrid drive systems, increasingly common in modern mobile crushers, use a diesel engine to generate electricity that then powers individual electric motors for the crusher, screens, and conveyors. This configuration allows each component to run at its actual required speed rather than being mechanically linked to a single engine speed, typically delivering meaningful fuel savings compared to fully hydraulic or mechanical drive systems.

Engine load management matters considerably; operating a crusher consistently near its rated capacity, rather than significantly under or over feeding it, generally achieves the best fuel-per-ton efficiency. Overloading forces the engine to work harder against resistance, while underloading wastes the fuel consumed simply running the plant at idle-adjacent output levels.

Regular engine maintenance — clean air filters, correctly calibrated fuel injection, and timely servicing — keeps fuel consumption close to rated specifications; a poorly maintained engine can burn substantially more fuel than a well-maintained equivalent doing the same work.

Some manufacturers now offer telematics systems that track fuel consumption per ton processed in real time, helping operators identify inefficient operating patterns or maintenance needs before they become costly. When comparing crusher models, ask manufacturers for realistic fuel consumption figures under representative load conditions rather than best-case ratings alone.
