What Is a Crushing and Screening Plant?

A crushing and screening plant is a system of machines that reduces large rocks or recycled material into smaller, uniformly graded aggregate suitable for construction, road building, or concrete production. It forms the backbone of quarrying, mining, and demolition recycling operations worldwide.

The process typically begins with a feeder — often a hopper with a vibrating grizzly — that regulates the flow of raw material into the primary crusher. Jaw crushers are the most common choice for this first stage, breaking oversized rock into more manageable pieces using compressive force between fixed and moving plates.

Material then moves via conveyor to secondary crushing, commonly handled by cone or impact crushers, which further reduce particle size and shape the material into a more cubical form suitable for high-quality aggregate.

Screening equipment — vibrating screens with multiple mesh decks — then separates the crushed material into different size fractions (for example, 0-5mm, 5-15mm, 15-25mm), each directed to its own stockpile via dedicated conveyors. Oversized material that doesn't pass through a given screen deck is often routed back to the crusher for further reduction, a process known as closed-circuit operation.
