Winter Operation of Crushing Equipment

Cold weather introduces specific operational challenges for crushing and screening plants, affecting both equipment performance and material handling characteristics.

Frozen or partially frozen feed material is a significant winter challenge — moisture in stockpiled aggregate or recycled material can freeze into large clumps that jam feeders and crushers, or freeze to screen mesh surfaces, causing blinding and reduced screening efficiency. Where possible, stockpile management strategies (covering material, maintaining drainage to prevent water pooling) help minimize this issue.

Hydraulic systems require particular attention in cold conditions; hydraulic fluid viscosity increases significantly at low temperatures, which can affect system responsiveness and increase strain on pumps during cold starts. Many manufacturers recommend extended warm-up procedures and, in extreme climates, cold-weather hydraulic fluid formulations.

Engine cold-starting becomes more demanding below freezing temperatures; block heaters, appropriate winter-grade engine oil, and battery maintenance all help ensure reliable startup and reduce excessive wear during cold starts.

Belt materials can become less flexible and more prone to cracking in extreme cold, so operators should inspect conveyor belts more frequently during winter months and consider cold-weather-rated belt compounds for operations in consistently freezing climates.

Water-based dust suppression systems need particular attention to prevent freezing within spray lines and nozzles, potentially requiring insulated or heat-traced piping, or a temporary switch to alternative dust management approaches during the coldest periods.

Plants that build these considerations into winter operating procedures maintain better production consistency and avoid the compounding costs of cold-weather equipment damage.
